House
Of Mysteries - F I G U R E S - Notes
|
|

|
I
tend to think of many of my paintings, but particulary those to do with
the figure as belonging to the 'holding' area that for some years I've
called 'The House Of Mysteries'. I use the word ' House' to mean the
human mind/body and something of our (my) interior landscape.
|
| | I purposefully use the name of that particular villa in Pompeii for the way it was named i.e. we don't entirely know what went on there - and even though time has wiped away the real and full ritualistic significance of those strange fresco's, much of the fugitive information is still there - still telling its story - still capable of eliciting a response - like modern cave paintings. |
| |
You
may notice that the Figures galleries continues some of the elements
from the Black Mountains paintings and other series - The House Of Mysteries
is a seemingly disparate collection of themes, but the House of Mysteries
copes with this - that is what it is there for - it is an aid to me
|

There
are ideas I try to work out in painting which I need to hold in
a kind of limbo stage for a while - other than in a sketchbook. So when
I first started to put these web pages together in 2000 it seemed natural
and useful to me to keep using The House Of Mysteries as a 'hold all'.

The
ammount of time in 'Limbo' doesn't matter to me, I am connected to them.
The important thing, particularly when I wasn't in a situation to spend
time or money on painting them - was to just do them in any way possible.
