G I L E A D   Notes
I am still very involved with the ideas and motivations behind these paintings, and I know there are a lot of 'things' in them that I want to return to - work yet to be carried forward - they'll wait..
When they were first exhibited at St Davids Hall Cardiff I published a 10 page booklet which included a long essay about these paintings.

It was a written attempt at finding what might be a 'common ground' in the face of these 'abstract' paintings and relied quite heavily on the writings of George Steiner in his book ' Real Presence'.
I sent him a copy along with apologies for maybe misunderstanding some of his work. It was particularly satisfying to recieve a congratulatory note from him on the opening night.
Without going into the ideas and various emotional circumstances that started this series - technically, they are built on three spaces, a concave space which is painted 'into' - a convex shape which is painted 'out of ' - and a flat plane, which is painted 'accross' or 'through'.
